Friend Went To Pay Real Estate Taxes & Found Out Someone Had Bought His House…any Recourse???
What to do!? He thought that in MO he had another yr, but it seems that the law was changed in 2002 w/o his knowing!
The tax assesor himself bought the house on a “Courthouse steps” type of auction. My friend has multiple schlorosis & has put a lot of work into this house!
He offered to pay the man back what he paid, but the he wants thousands more…any ideas on what to do!?

Get a lawyer.
Unfortunately, your friend must have missed something like notices from the assessor’s office, sheriff’s auction or something.
The only way the house could be sold out from under him if it entered foreclosure. he would be notified of this far in advance and would recieved eviction papers.
He needs to find a lawyer.

He failed to pay his taxes and that means some one else owns his property. They can do with it what they want. Lots of laws change without folks knowing. most people don’t keep up on even half of what congress passes. Then of course there is the pile of laws passed in each state. If you knew, you might vote a little differently next time.
Lots of property changes hands on back taxes. My fathers friend lost his house for 800 in taxes. He just didn’t have it so it sold on the court house steps. Some one bought a house for 800 bucks since there was no one there to out bid them. IF you friend was not notified in the usual manor, he may have some recourse. But otherwise he is now homeless.
